Join the Lab
Interested in graduate studies?
Dr. Hassan WILL be reviewing applications for students seeking graduate studies in the Clinical Science and Psychopathology; Cognitive, Developmental and Brain Sciences; and Social, Personality, and Developmental Psychology clusters for Fall 2025 entry.
Because we study typically developing children in the SEW lab, applications with relevant research experience, particularly in social and emotional child development, will be prioritized. Please note that the SEW lab operates in person. Students with a preference for remote work are not encouraged to apply.
Although students are welcome to email before applying to express their interest in joining the lab, this is not necessary. Dr. Hassan will review your application regardless of whether you emailed her beforehand. If you do choose to send an email to express interest, attaching a CV and transcript is helpful. You are also encouraged to attach a writing sample such as a thesis or research-related assignment. Given the volume of requests, she cannot accommodate meeting requests outside of the formal interview process. However, if you have any specific questions that are not addressed on this site or on Western’s graduate psychology page, you are welcome to request this information over email.
Interested in completing an undergraduate honours thesis in our lab?
The SEW lab accommodates 1-2 undergraduate honours thesis students per year. An interest in child development and strong data analytical skills are considered an asset. Evening and weekend availability is a requirement, given that we test children and families. Please note that behavioural observation coding is typically a major component of an honours thesis, and given the sensitive nature of these materials, coding is conducted in person on campus.
Interested in joining the lab as a paid research assistant?
The SEW lab is not hiring any research assistants or lab managers at this time.
Interested in joining the lab as a volunteer research assistant?
When possible, Dr. Hassan prefers to dedicate her time to graduate students, staff, independent study students, honours thesis students, or work-study students. As such, please consider applying for one of these positions before requesting a volunteer position. Volunteers must be willing to commit a minimum of 10 hours per week for at least one semester. At this time, there are no volunteer positions available in the SEW lab.
